Backlog

What is the product backlog?

The backlog is a prioritized list of tasks, work, or features that support the product strategy or roadmap. The backlog allows teams to prioritize and scope the work to be done during product development since product owners and development teams select tasks from the backlog to be worked on within each sprint.

Why is the product backlog important?

Product managers use the product backlog to communicate the ongoing product vision and strategy and execute the product roadmap. The backlog is key to innovating, bringing new value to customers, and ensuring smooth development processes for important features.

The backlog is essential for development teams since it provides a clear work schedule for development teams that's prioritized based on what should be built first.

It also outlines the features and improvements that need to be added to provide additional value to customers.

Who builds the product backlog?

Product managers typically build the product backlog as they identify new requirements surfaced by their business stakeholders and customer base. Product owners in the Agile framework select items for the backlog in order to move the development team towards a specific vision for the product. Development teams select items for the backlog in order to address important improvements or fixes for the product.
